On the morning of this Thursday (1/12), the Governor of Pernambuco met with entrepreneurs from Cape Igarassu, a chlorine factory located in Igarassu. The enterprise was recently acquired from Compass Minerals (the former owner). CAPE IGARASSU will invest R$ 290 million to replace the current mercury plant with a new membrane plant, which will be built in parallel. Once the membrane plant is completed, the mercury plant will be shut down, ahead of the deadline set by the Minamata Convention.
The project is also being supported by the Government of Pernambuco through the tax benefits granted by Prodepe. The plant is the only chlor-alkali production unit in Pernambuco and supplies essential industries such as water treatment and cleaning products.
The production capacity of the plant is 125 tons per day (tpd) of equivalent chlorine, with 1/3 (45 tpd) using membrane technology, the cleanest and most efficient available, and 2/3 (80 tpd) using mercury technology, which is scheduled to be closed by 2025 according to the Minamata Convention.
