Alliance Quimica | Maranhão
The chlor-alkali plant furthest north in Brazil
Located in Codó-MA, the plant has a production capacity of 19.5 tons per day of chlorine equivalent.
The plant began operating in November 2020 and has been supplying chlorine derivatives at competitive prices to the region, contributing to the economic development of a region that is one of the least developed in Brazil. We are contributing to the industrialization of a region which previously had a difficult access to our products and significantly reducing the carbon footprint in the supply chain.
Positive Impact
Circular Economy
A portion of the liquid effluents generated (brine) is reused to manufacture cleaning detergent by a local manufacturer.
Community Involvement
A partnership with Plan International has created a new program entitled “Empodera Elas” which puts at-risk, young women through a one-year entrepreneurship program including capital to start their own business. Chlorum hopes this program contributes positively to lifting up the municipality’s HDI index and incentive local small businesses.
Cost Reduction Leading to Regional Development The plant allowed for a significant reduction in transportation costs, increasing the competitiveness of local industries. Given chlor-alkali are base chemicals, this allowed for the region to leverage its industrial development.
Water Treatment
Our products will supply downstream industries that produce water treatment chemicals to help reduce costs and contribute to the expansion of the water treatment system.
Carbon Impact
We estimate an annual net reduction of CO2e emissions of +4,100 tons per year considering the net reduction of transportation for both raw materials and final products. In addition to reduction of emissions from transportation, the plant is run fully on renewable energy sources.
